Pantanal Research Center

The Pantanal Research Center (CPP, from the Portuguese Centro de Pesquisa do Pantanal) is a non-profit organization officially recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice as being of public interest. The CPP was founded in June 2002 and emerged as the result of a dialogue between civil society and the academic community that started in 2001. It is a horizontal network of research institutions active in the Pantanal. The principal objectives of the CPP are the acquisition of knowledge and the formation of highly skilled individuals in order to create and subsidize public policies regarding sustainable use of the Pantanal and other similar regions around the world.

Recognizing that the understanding of basic scientific concepts has become a prerequisite for citizens if they are to play an effective role in supporting sustainability, the CPP has established community participation as one of its pillars of action. The CPP is one of the nodes of the worldwide network of research centers of the United Nations University (UNU) through its "Pantanal Regional Environmental Program" (PREP). This network comprises nodes in Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Colombia, Canada, and the United States involved in research on wetlands in South America. In Brazil, it is represented by several academic institutions, public and private, as well as by the governments of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul and NGOs from these states.

The CPP aims to fulfill its mission by fostering cooperative research projects using an ecosystem approach to point out sustainable alternatives for the Pantanal region. The choice of research themes is the product of interactions between CPP researchers and local Pantanal communities. Thus, the CPP hopes to produce new knowledge of benefit to society while promoting large-scale community-outreach events. It also supports graduate and post-graduate students, as they will be the principal actors on the economic, social, political, cultural, and scientific stages of tomorrow.
