The Pantanal has raised international concern as it is a
relatively pristine region, from an ecological point of
view, which is under serious threat. Subsequently, there
is a need for more detailed knowledge of its ecology, economy
and the habits and customs of the people that live there.
This need for knowledge led to the creation of the Pantanal
Regional Environment Programme (PREP), which is supported
by the United Nations University (UNU) and is co-ordinated
by the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT). The programme
is an international pilot project which is being considered
a laboratory for finding ways of guiding research and actions
that can help wetland areas around the world. The CPP is
one of the partners in this programme and is establishing
a network of institutions which are vital for its successful
implementation.
